Not my Architecture classmates, my Drone Journalism classmates. I’m pretty sure the class’s average IQ is <90, it’s seriously like watching Anchorman in real life.

A couple weeks back we watched a video about researchers using DJI Phantom drones to map a volcano (which was described by a classmate as “help them find out about the science”). They lost several into the lava. My classmates were concerned that they were going to damage the volcano.

Today half of my group got Australia and Austria mixed up during our presentation. Also, kilometers were converted into pounds... multiple times.

I nearly had an aneurysm.

Kinja'd!!!

Mmmmm... Cosmos.

I really don’t understand how they made it to college, even in Mass Comm.

I’m realizing now that my school has a very wide range of people they accept.

Like seriously, what are these people doing here?

It’s utterly terrifying. These people can’t tell fact from BS at all, and they’re supposed to be journalists!

Hell, that’s even the class average with me buoying it.

When I was in grad school I bumped into a guy I went to high school with on a campus bus. He was in year 5 of chasing his bachelors in at that point. He asked me what time it was and his response was “Oh shit I’m late for class and I really need that credit!” What class? Ping-pong. Sounds like a perfect fit for your drone journalism class.

Is Drone Journalism one of the ‘easy but fun’ classes at your school? Seems like those attract the dumbest people, especially group projects.

I’m taking a class that’s partially about space travel and while we were discussing propulsion methods of spacecraft, one girl couldn’t understand why strapping a bunch of lasers to it doesn’t launch it at light speed (since light is a particle and space is a vacuum and Newton’s Third Law and God knows what else she was talking about). The professor, who worked at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory before teaching, was not amused.

I am amazed that there is a class called Drone Journalism.

I’m in a leadership class where we’re in the process of vetting people and weeding people that aren’t worthy. Some people complained about someone who got kicked out earlier this year but the common sense level was on par with the “lost factor” into a volcano.

The thing is, universities, all of them, market their exclusiveness through their acceptance programs. Which simply makes people feel special.

Universities are money machines, and the more people, the more money. So really it isn't that surprising how many idiots get in.

Not only that, but soft-hearted professors will let them pass with a C- and they’ll graduate with degrees. Then, they’ll get good-paying jobs and cause endless headaches for their co-workers while never being able to do their jobs properly.

So what’s the conversion factor for km to lbs?

In frustrating moments like this, I find it’s best to think about how stupid the average person is, and then realize that half of all people are less intelligent than that, and there’s nothing you can do about it. Just think how much better they make you look.

I deal with this all the time at work too. I also work for the government... The shit that gets passed down to us is pretty unbelievable. Everyone fawns all over these people and treats them like gods because they have master’s degrees, so they must be the best... except they all got their master’s right out of undergrad, with little to no experience in anything other than research.

It varied from time to time. The terrifying thing is that I know that IQ is a normally distributed curve, and as a group it should average out to 100. However, I’m already such a massive outlier when it comes to IQ that I have a hard time dealing with the average, let alone someone nearly a standard deviation below.

My program is actually selective, theirs not so much. Universities are definitely money machines, but there’s not that many Mass Comm majors. Also, this is their “hardest class” which I took for fun, haven’t studied in, and still have an A in.

04/22/2016 at 10:33

Kinja'd!!!0

Conceptually it’s interesting. The professors are trying to beat into their heads that FAA regulations on commercial UAV flights need to change, and that journalists can and need to be a part of the discussion. What are the ethics of photographing something from a UAV? Lots of questions around “drones” haven’t been resolved in courts, so we have to use case law surrounding manned flight, which may not really apply to UAS.

And yeah, they’re that dumb.

In my line of work, people only get their master’s directly out of undergrad if they can’t find a proper job before the next school year starts... cause they can’t get one because they have no experience, because they focused too hard on academics and didn’t have any time left over to join any groups or clubs or get a proper summer job, or go on internship, or anything like that.

From a journalism standpoint the FAA333 exemption’s requirement for a pilots license is excessive. Some instructed flight training and recorded flight hours would be more reasonable. Additionally, pilots and their companies should be required to have insurance specifically for the drone.

Kinja'd!!! Flyboy is FAA certified insane > Bman76 (no it doesn't need a WS6 hood) M. Arch
04/22/2016 at 12:16

Kinja'd!!!0

Even as a pilot, I agree. However I this there needs to be rigorous training on not just the operation, but also the airspace system, because that is a major problem with drone operators right now.

Either way, I’ve had my 333 denied already, they’re being very stingy with them.
